My Inspiration-Ubuntu

I spent my childhood in South Africa at the DSJ (German International School Johannesburg). At school, I participated in the swimming club, cross-country, and art classes. The school taught me much more than just South African culture. It shaped me, and through it, I was raised to become a young woman who, with assertiveness, creativity, and self-confidence, is now completing 9th grade in Switzerland and will begin an apprenticeship in a few months.

The Ubuntu Way

In South Africa, there is a Zulu/Xhosa word that means more than just a philosophy: Ubuntu.

"We are, therefore I am."
"I am because we are."

That is the essence of Ubuntu.

We are all connected - your luck is my luck, your joy is my joy, and your pain is my pain. In a country with a complex history and deep scars, yet full of hope, Ubuntu has become the soul of an entire nation.

In South Africa, people don’t just live next to each other, but with each other. We need one another to be whole.

Ubuntu is not just a word or an idea - it’s part of daily life. The warm wave on the street, help from strangers, and the willingness to share, even when there’s barely enough - that is Ubuntu.

It is a powerful connection between people, no matter where they come from.

That’s the true magic of this country:
Despite great challenges and a difficult past, something unique still shines through - hope, compassion, and a community that reaches out to everyone.

You can help too. Be part of Ubuntu!
